How to Solve Aquarium Water Quality Issues

Aquarium Care & Maintenance Instructions

It is not unusual that one or more problems arise with the quality of water in the aquarium. Especially you are beginner and this is quite new hobby, you might be unaware of importance of maintaining water parameters at optimal levels. Wrong parameters can be root cause for making fish sick. If not any other obvious reason cannot be noticed, it is quite sure that the problem is in the water! Sometimes it could look like murky, but in some cases it could look clean and there still could be serious problems. Therefore, it is essential that you will test parameters in the tank with the water test kit regularly.

Use test kit to measure water parameters

In order to resolve quality issues, you need first of all ensure that pH level and temperature of the water is suitable for the type of fish you have. Wrong PH and too high or low temperature could cause serious health problems. Other things you need to check are level of nitrite and ammonia. Ammonia level should be zero in normal conditions and nitrates need to be below 40 PPM.

You need also keep track of the level of toxic nitrogenous compounds in the water. The immune system of the fish gets weaken when they are considerably stressed due to incorrect levels of nitrogen compounds and other toxic elements in aquarium water. Even in a well maintained fish tank there can be parasites and diseases in their dormant form to which fish with weak immune system can be more at risk. Usually it is impossible or difficult to treat the infestation of parasites or diseases until they get established very well.

Change water partially and use conditioners

You need start changing 25% water of the aquarium everyday if the level of toxic nitrogen compounds is above recommended level. Any debris at the substrate surface needs to be siphoned off at the same time. Remember also adjust the temperature of replacement water to the correct level.

Tap water needs also be treated with a good conditioner. You can use for example Amquel Plus or Prime. Both of those are good for treating tap water. The toxic nitrogen compounds can also be neutralized using these conditioners. However, the process takes up to 48 hours. Check also how to do water changes in a fish tank for more information.

In order to avoid the overcrowding of nitrogen compounds, 25% of the water needs to be replaced after measuring their level with the test kit. The debris on the surface of the tank must be siphoned off while changing its water partially. However, only 1/3 of it should be deeply cleaned every week. If you clean everything at once, or change all the water at once, you will cause serious disturbance to the ecosystem. It is important that you will not remove all bacteria existing on the filter elements. It is also essential that you will not remove all substrate surface. that is important because of removal of beneficial bacteria will disturb the ecosystem, including the nitrogen level.

Similarly the elements of filter should be changed frequently, but not in the week of partial cleaning of substrate surface. It is essential that you will never change them all at the same time. The old trick is to still use some old filter media with new replacements to keep the nitrogen cycle going on.
